Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

The faculty of Arts and Saocial Sciences provides training in such areas as Economics, Mass communication, History, Geography and others. It also offers service courses in languages and majors and minors for Arts education students. Post graduate programmes are also in place focusing on contemporary issues such as Religion and Peace, Geography and History.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED AT THE FACULTY:

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
This is a 3 year programme that combines English based courses and Islamic studies. Students major in core Arts Subjects. Students are also introduced to Applied Computer papers in Information Technology and Information Systems

Entry Requirements: O level certificate plus 2 principal passes at A level or a relevant Diploma.

Bachelor of Arts in Economics (BA ECON)
This is a 3 year programme that majors in core Arts Subjects and Social Sciences. It focuses on Economics and other Developmental and management subjects. Students are also introduced to Applied Computer courses In Information Technology and Information System

Entry Requirements: O level certificate with a credit pass in Mathematics plus, 2 principal passes at A level in Arts, Sciences,commercial or other subjects. One principal pass should be in Economics, or Diploma in Business studies

Bachelor of Development Studies (BDS)
This is a 3 year programme that majors in core Arts Subjects and Social Sciences. It focuses on Developmental issues, management and social science subjects are offered. Students are also introduced to Applied Computer courses In Information Technology and Information Systems

Entry Requirements: O level certificate plus 2 principal passes at A level or a relevant Diploma.

Bachelor of Science Mass Communication (Bsc Mass Com)
A 3 year Programme focusing on training students in theory and practice of mass communication and journalism. Specializations include broadcasting, print media and public relations. Students are also introduced to Applied Computer papers in Information Technology and Information Systems

Entry Requirements: O level certificate plus 2 principal passes at A level or a relevant Diploma. The applicant should have a credit in English language at O level or a credit in General Paper at A level.

Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS)
This is a 3 year programme that majors in core Arts Subjects and Social Sciences. Various Administrative, management and social science subjects are offered. Students are also introduced to Applied Computer papers in Information Technology and Information Systems

Entry Requirements: O level certificate plus 2 principal passes at A level or a relevant Diploma.

Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration (BSWASA)
This is a 3 year programme that majors in core Arts Subjects and Social Sciences. It focuses on Social Administration, management and social sciences. Students are also introduced to Applied Computer courses In Information Technology and Information Systems

Entry Requirements: O level certificate plus 2 principal passes at A level or a relevant Diploma.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Master of Arts in History
Its a 2 year coursework-dissertation based master. Students are expected to complete their coursework component in the first 3 semesters and embark on the dissertation in the last semester. Students do Applied Computer papers in Information Technology and Information Systems

Entry Requirements: A bachelor's degree in History from a recognised university.

Master of Arts in History
2 year programme deals with in depth study of history, focusing on african and European areas. Students are expected to carry out research after the 3rd semester.

Entry Requirements: Honours Degree in Arts with a bias in History from a recognized University.

Master of Arts in Religion, Peace and Conflict Resolution
This is a 2 year programme built on the coursework-dissertation model. It focuses on religion, its history and influence on global social, economic and political events and how it can be afacility for peace on a global scale. Students do Applied Computer papers in Information Technology and Information Systems

Entry Requirements: Honours Degree in Arts or Sciences from a recognised University.

Master of Arts Kiswahili
This is a 2 year programme that focuses on proficiency of the Kiswahili language. Its 3 semester coursework based and one semester for dissertation/ Thesis. Students also do Applied Computer papers in Information Technology

Entry Requirements: Honours Degree in Arts with a bias in Kiswahili from a recognised University.

Faculty Departments


FACULTY DEPARTMENTS

Economics
The department offers an undergraduate programme in ecomonics and courses to B.Arts Education students either minoring or majoring in Economics and to Management students.

Geography
The department offers service courses to geography students from the faculty of education. It is in the process of launching post graduate programmes in geography.

History
The department offers service courses to Arts education students of history. It also offers a post graduate programme in history

Mass Communication
The department offers an undergraduate programme in mass communication. Students specialise either in print media, Radio proadcasting or Public Relations.

Political Science
The department offer service courses in political science to other departments. It also offers post graduate programmes in Religion Peace and Conflict Resoulution.
